Alright it is 2 o’clock in the afternoon. I am on my second cup of strong coffee and I’ve got dinner, apple cider and cookies going. And I am fired up just enough to talk about the “Mom Guilt”! It feels like no matter how much I may get right, how much I get done, and how much I put myself together, “Mom Guilt” is waiting in the corner for the one item that doesn’t get accomplished.
Personally I think it is time for the “mom guilt” to take a hike and not return. The best way to fight the guilt and the accusations and lies that come…is with the TRUTH!
I am sure we have all heard and maybe even said it ourselves a time or two the phrase, “The truth will set you free.” Those words could not be more accurate when it comes to the “mom guilt”. And you may be saying, “Morgan, what truth is there that could stop the persistence of the mom guilt? I’ve tried everything I can think of!”
Well, scripture. It is the one truth that has overcome the lies of the enemy and will always be able to do that. As it says in Romans 8:1 CSB…
“Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus, because the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and death.”
Once you have accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior no longer does the enemy have the ability to bind you and hold you down by his lies, condemnation, guilt, and judgement. You have been set free by the one who has led captivity captive! Ephesians 4:8 CSB
“Therefore He says:
“When He ascended on high,
He led captivity captive,
And gave gifts to men.”
Yes, the guilt and the lies will still come up because we live within a fallen world, until the day Jesus returns. But as daughters of the King, you have the ability to take your thoughts captive and bring them into the obedience of Christ. 2 Corinthians 10:5 CSB
“...and we take every thought captive to obey Christ.” - the last portion of this verse.
When that mom guilt comes, because you and I both know it will. We have the ability to take scripture and how Jesus has defined us and armed us up as His daughters. You don’t have to argue or rationalize with the “mom guilt.” When you make mistakes as a mom, which you will, we all do. I do it all the time. Being made of flesh I am the furthest thing from perfect and make mistakes daily. Thankfully it is in my and your weakness that Christ's strength is made perfect. 2 Corinthians 12:9-10 CSB
"But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is perfected in weakness.”
Therefore, I will most gladly boast all the more about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may reside in me. 10 So I take pleasure in weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and in difficulties, for the sake of Christ. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”
This is a great verse to use as truth against the lies that “mom guilt” will bring. When you make a mistake, take it to the Lord, lay it at His feet, and surrender yourself to Him for His power to flow in and through you. Let the Lord grow you and lead you in how best to parent your babies, not the “mom guilt.”
Guilt and condemnation are not the heart of Jesus nor do they produce good fruit. Stay connected to Jesus through prayer, being in His word, and the body of believers. Pray for the Lord to give you verses to build your personal armory against the lies of “mom guilt.”
Being a momma is hard enough without having to battle against the lies of “mom guilt.” When the “mom guilt” shows up because we know it will. Stand firm as a daughter of the King in and through Jesus Christ and let His truth replace the lies and condemnation!
