Don't Forget the Cake

The cutest thing happened a couple of weeks ago. When all of us were snuggling in bed and saying our prayers, I asked Allie if there was anything that she wanted to thank Jesus for. And to our surprise after a few minutes of her being quiet she said the name of her best friend. Then proceeded to say thank you for her best friend’s younger sibling, her Auntie, Uncle, all the dogs, her blankie, and the list goes on and on.

The last couple of nights she has ended all of her thank yous with thanking Jesus for cake. Which is just the cutest thing ever because we haven’t had cake in weeks but every night she ends with cake. My hubby said to me, “That is the sweetest and most toddler thing I have ever heard.”

It really is. She just thanks Jesus for any and everything. That got my thinking about why as we grow we stop thanking Jesus for any and everything. Scripture shares time and time again the importance of bringing your thanksgiving before the Lord.

One of my favorite verses on thanksgiving is in Philippians 4:6-7 NKJV (new King James Version)

“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

With thanksgiving let your request be made known to God. We first must come to Him with praise and thanksgiving, a request that doesn’t have an age limit on it.Yet I have struggled in my adulthood to think of items that I am grateful for when I have prayed. Feeling as though nothing all that great is taking place in my life. Because I put a requirement on what I needed to thank God for.

I have to be able to thank Him for something really big or something that only could have taken place by the work of His hands. You know, requirements like that. Yet, in hearing our sweet Allie thanking the Lord for cake it reminds me just how much we all have to be thankful for.

Nothing happens without God’s hand in it. The sun rising, the rain falling, even the soft breeze that blows through the trees are all done by God’s perfect plan and design. How could I ever feel like there isn’t something to be thankful for. I have

  • A beautiful, healthy and joyful little girl
  • A hubby that loves me
  • A crazy but overall great family
  • Woke up this morning with air in my lungs
  • Had coffee ready to be brewed
  • Am sitting here in a home that has power and running water
  • Had the ability to get my hands dirty in our garden today
  • Got to share some dark chocolate with Allie
  • Got to snuggle both my hubby and daughter today

There are so many moments in a day that you and I can sing praises to the Lord for. If only we remember to thank God…for even our cake.
